"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." - Chinese Proverb
Water is a scarce resource in many parts of the world, particularly in seasons when there is no rain and food cannot be grown. All too often, the result is hunger. By using this simple, gravity fed drip irrigation system known as The Bucket Kit, enough vegetables can be grown to feed a family of five to seven.
The Bucket Kit System is inexpensive, and does not require pumps or running water. It is easily assembled, following written and/or pictorial instructions. Regardless of the region of the world or language, the Bucket Kit is highly beneficial in ensuring a food supply when there is no rain.
The Bucket Irrigation Kit includes all the parts needed to make a gravity irrigation system using an ordinary 5-gallon (20 liters) pail.
- 100 Feet of drip irrigation tape
- A filter screen
- Connection fittings
Water Conservation: Bucket Kits reduce water requirements by up to 70%.
The bucket is suspended 3 feet off the ground, and tubes connect the bucket to irrigation drip tape (100 feet) lying on top of the ground. Twice each day the bucket is filled with water. Water flows by gravity from the bucket through the tubes and tape, then into the soil in a pattern to wet the root zone of each plant, leaving the rest of the garden dry. A typical single installation may consist of 2, 4 or 6 rows.
