Below is an example of a typical annual energy cost comparison between a geothermal system and four traditional HVAC systems. The costs are based on a 2,000 square foot single story home (well-insulated, three bedrooms, two baths, living, family, and laundry rooms, plus a kitchen). Indoor temperatures were calculated at 70 degrees Fahrenheit in winter and 75 degrees in the summer.

The costs of domestic hot water production are included in this example. The calculation for geothermal heat pumps includes the use of an electric water heater in conjunction with the use of a desuperheater.
